“Shadow of the Tomb Raider” Bow, Square Enix

This bow is Lara Croft’s primary weapon in the latest game by Square Enix, Eidos, and Crystal Dynamics – “Shadow of the Tomb Raider.” SoloRoboto Industries was hired to produce 6 identical copies of the bow for use at the initial worldwide launch events in London, Montreal, and Los Angels, as well as subsequent convention and promotional appearances. Square Enix provided the in-game 3D model, which required substantial adaptation to prepare it for 3D printing. Once printed and assembled, the […]

Winter Soldier Arm, Marvel Studios

The Winter Soldier Arm takes the cake for most time-intensive project I’ve ever tackled, roughly doubling the hours of the previous record holder, Star-Lord. A lot of thought went into how to make a piece that effectively portrayed what you saw on-screen in Captain America: The Winter Soldier, which was predominantly CGI. I knew I wanted the final piece to be chrome-plated, which dictated a hard-cast piece, not a flexible one (there were a number of other reasons for this decision, but my […]

Heimdall, Marvel Studios

Based on the character from the movie Thor by Marvel Studios, Heimdall was the first full costume SoloRoboto Industries was commissioned to make. It was also my first time working with EVA foam, and my first full suit of armor. It was an immense challenge, and it had to be completed on a tight deadline. At the time the only reference available was the film itself, so the biggest hurdle was patterning out the armor to fit the client. The helmet pattern […]

Steel Sword, Skyrim

The Steel Sword was originally commissioned as part of a fan film based on the video game, The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim. It is a reproduction of a weapon that would have been made entirely of steel, and had to replicate the look and feel of real metal as much as possible. The entire piece is “cold cast” urethane resin with an outer layer of aluminum powder, which creates a real metallic sheen when polished. Aging and “rust” details were added using a […]

Star-Lord Helmet, Guardians of the Galaxy

Based on the helmet featured in Marvel Studios’ film Guardians of the Galaxy, the Star-Lord helmet is the most time-intensive project I’ve completed so far – totaling well over 200 hours of labor. This was a rare personal project – I loved the design, and wanted to challenge myself to hand-make something obviously symmetrical and “machined” looking (knowing full well the movie helmet was almost entirely 3D printed). The more time I invested, the more I wanted to make sure I […]

“Ant-Man” Helmet, Marvel Comics

The Classic Ant-Man Helmet was commissioned primarily as a display piece, but still needed to serve as a functional costume helmet. As drawn by the original artist, Jack Kirby, the helmet design suffered from several common problems of comic book costumes of the day. Mainly, that it was drawn as a solid metal sphere without space for a chin or neck, and eyes that didn’t line up with normal human anatomy. My main task was to make something that would capture the art […]

Squall’s Gunblade, FF8

I’d wanted to make a Gunblade since I first saw the game years ago, and it was a great challenge to make! The Revolver pieces were built up from layers of acrylic and styrene plastic, then sanded down to the proper form. Additional details were added using more layers of plastic (the hammer from acrylic, the trigger from layered styrene, and the barrels from PVC and aluminum tubing). The cylinder was lathed from a piece of pressure cast urethane resin, and the grooves […]

Wonder Woman Armor, DC Comics

The Wonder Woman armor was commissioned as a set of cosplay armor, based on a number of varying art styles. Later, my studio was commissioned by a second client to modify the armor to match the style of artist Terry Dodson, and I made a second belt to match. I started with a plaster body cast of the client (in her corset, since the armor would be sitting on top), and sculpted both the Belt and Chest pieces entirely from body filler. Details […]

Dr. Doom Mask, Marvel Comics

The Dr. Doom mask was the first piece commissioned from SoloRoboto Industries by an outside client. A casting of the client’s head was made from plaster bandages, and the shape of the mask was sculpted over that to ensure a good fit. A silicone mold was made of the sculpture, and a urethane resin positive cast from the mold. The resin casting was body shopped, and further details added (including the mouth “grill” and all the rivets), before a second […]
